Olfaction: from odorant molecules to the olfactory cortex.
How do we smell? Our knowledge of how odor information from the environment is perceived has greatly advanced since the discovery of approximately 1,000 genes for odorant receptors in the mammalian genome. From the combination of molecular-genetic, electrophysiological, and optical imaging studies a better understanding of how we smell is emerging.
متن کاملWiring up single molecules
The possibility of using single molecules as active elements of electronic devices offers a variety of scientific and technological opportunities. In this article, we discuss transistors, where electrons flow through discrete quantum states of a single molecule. First, we will describe molecules, where current flows through one cobalt atom surrounded by two insulating terpyridyl ligands. Depend...
متن کاملA single protein based nanobiosensor for odorant recognition
We propose a nanosensor with a biological active part able to identify specific odorants. The biological part should be constituted by olfactory receptors pertaining to the G protein-coupled receptors, the most efficient natural sensors for odorant discrimination. Modeling, design, and experiments performed for proving the concept are reported and discussed.
متن کاملPiezoresistivity in single DNA molecules
Piezoresistivity is a fundamental property of materials that has found many device applications. Here we report piezoresistivity in double helical DNA molecules. By studying the dependence of molecular conductance and piezoresistivity of single DNA molecules with different sequences and lengths, and performing molecular orbital calculations, we show that the piezoresistivity of DNA is caused by...
متن کاملNanorheology of single protein molecules
The unfolding process of dimerized protein was investigated on a single protein basis using an atomic force microscope (AFM). In normal force-distance curve measurements, each monomer unit was unfolded step by step. We also measured the relax-stress response using “nanorheology AFM” that was newly developed to apply any required movements on a z-piezoelectric scanner, especially short stroke si...
